Epinal's image of the white stork setting up its nest on Alsatian chimneys has taken a hit.

Much less bucolic, a couple of these migratory birds have taken up residence on an electric pole that supports a 20,000 volt line, along the A 43, in the town of Cessieu (Isère).

"It's a completely new situation for us," says Jean-Christophe Fizet, one of the managers of Enedis in the Alps, present on site Friday, May 13 during an operation to secure the line.

“Storks have a large wingspan.

The risk is that a wing hits the line and that the bird is electrocuted, it was therefore necessary to intervene.

»

Intervene, yes, but not too soon, as Jean-Marc Taupiac, regional director of the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO) points out: “The couple built their nest in early March.

It was necessary to wait until their eggs hatched and the storks grew large enough, otherwise the risk of such an intervention would have been that the parents would abandon the nest.

»

A week ago, Enedis agents therefore installed insulating covers using poles, under the questioning gaze of storks eyeing them from their nest, but also that of motorists passing at full speed on the motorway just to the side.

A highly perilous forty-five minute operation, while the line was still under tension.

Now the question arises of moving the nest after the storks leave, in a month.

“We will seek advice from our Alsatian colleagues.

They're not used to it anymore!

smiles Jean-Christophe Fizet.
