Monkeypox detected in Bavaria: the current situation

The 26-year-old patient is being treated in a Munich clinic in the Schwabing district.

The man is in isolation and has mild symptoms, reports the BR.

According to Clemens Wendtner, chief physician at Schwabing's infectiology department, he has slight dysphagia and an elevated temperature.

According to the Ministry of Health, the patient is a Brazilian who traveled through Germany from Portugal – after Düsseldorf and Frankfurt he had been in Munich for a week.

When he noticed the first symptoms, he immediately sought treatment - a PCR test then provided certainty.

The health department of the city of Munich is currently determining further contacts of the infected person.

They are informed about possible symptoms, hygiene measures and transmission routes, explains Bavaria's Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU).

The Bavarian health authorities are also informed.

A sequencing of the detected virus should show by the middle of next week whether it is the less dangerous variant from West Africa or the more serious one from the Congo.

Monkeypox Virus: Transmission and Outlook

Monkeypox, so called because it was detected in a monkey when it was discovered, can be transmitted from animal to human (zoonoses) and from human to human.

According to the Tagesschau, transmission occurs via large droplets in the air.

In addition, the pustules that appear with the rashes are infectious.

Anyone who comes into contact with it can become infected.

You don't have to panic, most of the courses of an infection are mild.
