Erkheim - Since June 2020, Diakonie Memmingen has been supporting seniors in need of care and their relatives with a new day care and outpatient care in Erkheim.

Due to the corona measures, the facilities have not yet been presented to the public.

This was made up for last Saturday with nice summer weather and a few visitors as part of an open day.

The rooms are on the ground floor of a new building on the eastern outskirts of Erkheim, surrounded by detached houses and a company property.

In addition to the social welfare facilities, there are 27 barrier-free apartments for all generations in the building.

The builder and owner of the house is Wohn-Baugesellschaft Mindelheim GmbH.

“The neighbors are very friendly.

When we are with our guests on the terrace or in the garden, some of them always wave from their balconies or say hello when they pass by,” says Irina Vetter, nurse at the day care center.

The integration into the town as well as the good location for guests from the surrounding communities was an important argument for the choice of the new location.

A total of around 35 seniors are currently in day care, 10 to 13 people per day.

Some are suffering from dementia, others are dependent on a wheelchair, some are still completely mobile - seniors with or without a nursing degree can come.

The daily routine is a mixture of fixed routines and various offers and options, depending on your desires and needs.

Guests are either picked up by the in-house chauffeur service or they come individually.

Afterwards we have breakfast together before the newspaper round starts.

Then they go into the garden, for example, to take care of the plants in the raised beds, they play bingo or train their memory.

Above all, the gardening is a great success - the herb garden bloomed so well last year that not only could we produce our own herbal tea, but even the diaconal facilities in Memmingen were also supplied.

After lunch, there is a rest period before singing, dancing or playing.

After coffee, each day ends with a joint end of the day before everyone goes home.

In addition to a fixed daily structure, guests should be offered a variety of activities and training for their skills and movements.

This is supported by external forces, such as physiotherapists or occupational therapists.

Due to the Corona crisis, the start of day care was difficult.

Visits or excursions were not possible and as many old people as possible could not come.

At the same time, day care was the only way for some guests to get out of their own four walls - this strengthened the sense of unity between guests and employees.

"In the past two years we have grown together as a family," emphasizes Irina Vetter.

Heinz Mießl from Pfaffenhausen confirms this sentence.

He came to the open house with his wife.

He has been going to day care once a week for almost two years.

"The food is good and the staff is very friendly and welcoming," he says.

"I have a lot of fun playing games together, for example card games." He also states: "We've grown since the easing, more people are coming." Nevertheless, the day care still has places available for interested seniors.

At the beginning of the open day, Stefan Gutermann, chairman of the Diakonisches Werk Memmingen eV, gave a short speech.

Among other things, he thanked the mayor of Erkheim, Christian Seeberger, and the market town council for their support in implementing the project over the past few years.

Gutermann also expressed a big thank you to all employees for their dedication and commitment.

He emphasized: "Day care is much more than care - it is community."
