A three-year-old boy drowned today (Saturday) in a private pool at home in Atlit and is in critical condition.
An MDA team that was called to the scene located the boy unconscious and he was evacuated to Rambam Hospital in Haifa during resuscitation operations.
The boy, a resident of Nesher, stayed with his family with the Atlit family in a cottage neighborhood, some of which has private pools.
The incident occurred while the families were having lunch indoors.
Neighbors said the boy who was playing outside apparently lowered the buoys and entered the water that way.
One of the neighbors who was handling his car on the street right in front of the yard was the first to respond and immediately began resuscitation operations.
Police arrived at the scene, cordoned off the house and prevented access to the yard and began investigating the circumstances.
According to data from the organization Prior to Child Safety, since the beginning of 2022, three children have died from drowning.
In 2021, 19 children drowned.
Orly Silvinger, CEO of the organization Before Child Safety, said: “The hot season has just begun and we are already witnessing an increase in drownings.
About half of the drownings in the last five years have been children under the age of five, with most (about 40%) drowning in a home pool.
"" This week we mark Child Safety Week as a safe summer and preventing drownings.
We call on parents, do not rely on miracles - do not leave children under the age of 5 or who are unskilled in swimming in an unattended water environment not even for a moment.
Home pools must be fenced with a gate that locks automatically to prevent children from entering unattended. "
