The photo exhibition "Water as an element of life" by Rosemarie Rittmaier from Geretsried can be seen in the ZUK until June 12th.

Benediktbeuern – The exhibition "Water as an element of life" with photographs by Rosemarie Rittmaier can be seen until June 12 at the Center for Environment and Culture (ZUK) in the Benediktbeuern monastery.

The former physics and mathematics teacher at the Hohenburg Gymnasium in Lenggries only realized that water in any form occupies such a large space in her work when she viewed the photos for a planned exhibition some time ago.

The natural scientist likes to research how water behaves

"On my travels and hikes in the region, I often only photographed the water," says the photographer from Traunstein, who has lived in Geretsried for 43 years.

“As a natural scientist, I naturally enjoy water: researching how the flow conditions are and generally exploring how water behaves.”

Motifs captivate viewers

The fact that Rittmaier was at work from a scientific point of view, so to speak, does not stand in the way of the spontaneous reception of her meaningful photos.

The choice of motifs and the skilful play with sharpness and blurring immediately cast a spell over the viewer.

Hobby photographer likes to capture special moods

Since she was ten years old, the natural scientist has been engaged in photography, which has become her lifelong hobby.

Rittmaier explains that her motivation for pulling out the camera is to capture special moods.

“The river is my big topic, if only because I walk my dog along the Isar three times a day.” However, the Labrador crossbreed is very afraid of water, she reports with a laugh.

Recordings come from the region, but also from vacation spots

For the exhibition in the ZUK, she primarily selected photos that were taken during her hikes from Tölz and Bichl.

Nevertheless, she has thrown in a few holiday memories from distant countries.

Actually, she didn't want to do any captions.

"Look at you!

The picture can speak for itself”, is her motto.

"But then I was asked to state where the picture was taken." It makes it easier for the viewer to identify them, but it doesn't spoil the joy of the beautiful shots.

Photographer wants to show beautiful sides of the water

Rittmaier deliberately ignores the other face that the water can show – just think of the devastating destruction in the Ahr valley: “Of course I know that the water can also be brutal, but I want to show its beautiful side.” And she presents it them in captivating variety: photos of the Isar, one in changing shades of blue and green, another that merges the blue sky, the water and the autumn leaves on the opposite bank into merging colors, actually look like paintings.

"This is due to the deliberately chosen lack of focus, which preserves the character of the flowing," explains Rittmaier.

Fascinated by the choice of perspective of the pictures

"Wild water" also shows the mountain stream, which looks like a waterfall due to the choice of perspective.

"I was very close to that.

That rock in the foreground is in sharp focus for the eye to linger on while the falling water is captured in motion.” But a single drop of dew on a blade of grass “just before the sun licks it up” is also beautifully captured set.

It goes without saying that fountains are also one of her favorite motifs.

But how Rittmaier captures their water features in front of Herrenchiemsee Palace or on the Salzburg Cathedral Square is fascinating.

Finally, a motif from the region should be singled out, the "Golden Stream in the Lainbachtal": The water shimmers in the evening sun like liquid gold.

A terrific effect!
