Schongau – The city wall encirclement should be continuously illuminated, the wall and gates should be specially highlighted.

That has been a fact for a long time.

Now Markus Tuppen and Stefan Vetter from the responsible planning office Day & Light presented their concept to the building committee.

“How does the user experience the lighting at night?

How does he perceive them?” These were the main questions Markus Tuppen asked himself.

The aim was to make it possible to experience the historic city wall in its entirety in the evening hours, both from a distance and when walking around the city wall surroundings.

The first section is the sun trench and the ladder to heaven.

To this end, masts with spotlight heads are erected at regular intervals along the paths.

In the first area from the police tower in the direction of the Sonnengraben, there will be five, says Tuppen.

The ladder to heaven is also to be illuminated with five such masts.

Additional spotlights illuminate the wall, towers and gates from the same masts – here, for example, the police tower.

According to the planner, a solution is also to be found for the passage through the tower, which is currently unlit.

Tuppen and Vetter envisage a light color similar to that in the old town for the paths.

The accents should be warmer with less blue and not as orange as currently.

The use of well-shaded LED lighting technology with a minimal amount of false radiation and glare creates an illumination of the traffic areas without creating fearful areas.

In addition, the cityscape is staged appropriately and the night is still preserved, they summarize.

Environmental and insect-friendliness is to be guaranteed through the conscious use of light and economical operation.

“It is planned to turn off the lights at 11 p.m.

The paths should then only be illuminated when necessary, ”explained Tuppen.

Of course, local residents are also taken into account.

The planners came up with three different options for the “attractive location” Sonnengraben.

Variant 1: Design as an "open-air living room" with two lamps that resemble oversized floor lamps.

Variant 2: lower light points that tend to shine downwards and Variant 3: only illumination of the entrances and smaller accent spotlights, similar to those around the city wall.

For reasons of consistency and, above all, to prevent vandalism, the administration would recommend variant 3, according to city master builder Sebastian Dietrich.

The committee members unanimously agreed.

After the meeting – which was specially postponed by two hours – there was an on-site visit.

The planners had brought two corresponding masts with them to give the building committee members the most impressive possible picture of the optics and the different lighting variants.
