It is now clear who the district of Freising will host as "Host Town" at the Special Olympics World Games 2023: A delegation from Kenya will be a guest.

District

– The exchange can begin: host towns and the delegations of the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 have finally been assigned.

"The district of Freising will receive the delegation from Kenya from June 12 to 15, 2023," reports district office spokesman Robert Stangl.

The group should consist of 114 people, but the team size is subject to change.

“The role of host town suits the district”

The largest municipal inclusion project in the history of the Federal Republic creates a new sense of togetherness and opens up space for encounters far beyond the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023 (June 17 to 25, 2023).

The host towns prepare the reception for the international delegations.

For four days before the start of the competitions in Berlin, the district of Freising will host the athletes and their supervisors from Kenya.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

“Our role as host town suits the district of Freising well.

We look forward to our guests from Kenya and to getting to know their culture and to bringing them closer to our district and its beauties,” says District Administrator Helmut Petz.

“We are already looking forward to great four days in June 2023 and interesting encounters with the people from Kenya.

We hope that friendships will be made and opportunities for inclusion will be lived and shaped.”

Anyone who can speak Swahili should get in touch

Robert Wäger, deputy district administrator, brought up the idea of applying for the project as a district in October 2021 in the committee for demographic and social issues of the Freising district council.

"Both the district administrator and the colleagues in the district council, the mayors addressed and the open work with the disabled by Lebenshilfe were enthusiastic and have pledged their support." The district wants to set an example for more participation and recognition of people with disabilities.

“I have already received a lot of approval for our participation.

I am all the more looking forward to visiting clubs and cultural offerings in the Freising district with the guests from Kenya.”

With the final allocation, a first phase of the relationship begins.

Making contacts, looking for accommodation, designing the program of the stay: The organizational team, consisting of Robert Wäger, District Commissioner for Disabled Persons Konrad Weinzierl, District Councilor Marianne Heigl, Susanne Zottmann from the District Office and Saskia Hobmeier from Lebenshilfe expect a lot of work.

“The guests speak both English and Swahili.

If there are citizens in the district who speak Swahili and would like to support us, I would be very happy," says Wäger.

Suggestions and offers for accommodation and activities are also welcome.

Inclusion should also remain in the municipalities afterwards

With the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, the world's largest inclusive sports event, inclusion should become more tangible.

190 delegations from all over the world are coming to Germany to take part in the games and the associated "Host Town Program".

"The aim is to enable the delegations to have an intercultural experience and at the same time to achieve the vision of an inclusive and barrier-free society in Germany," reports Stangl.

“Each delegation comes from a different cultural background with different eating habits, manners and idiosyncrasies.

This delegation profile is intended to give everyone involved in the Host Town Program an insight into the background of the delegation.

Most importantly, however,

"Sustainability is also very important - that inclusion remains in the communities after the World Games," says Mark Solomeyer, spokesman for athletes and Vice President of Special Olympics Germany (SOD).

The Host Town Program plays a key role in creating inclusive living spaces and social participation for people with intellectual disabilities.

The large number of inclusive projects should shape a diverse society beyond the 2023 World Games.
