The most beautiful tourist trains to take in France

2022-05-21T08:22:09.657Z

By steam or cogwheel, they travel picturesque lines by the sea, in the mountains or across fields. An ideal way to enjoy the landscapes and relive the epic of the railroad. Le Figaro has selected a tourist train to discover this summer in each region of metropolitan France.

There are TGVs that take us to the other side of the country in a few hours.

And there are these trains from another era which interfere in the remote corners of our regions, spitting out a plume of steam.

Taking a seat aboard a diesel railcar or a wooden wagon is also like stepping back in time and reliving the golden age of the railway.

Restored and operated by associations of rail enthusiasts, these trains are now intended solely for tourist use.

In order not to rush machines that are sometimes centenarians, the speed rarely exceeds 30 km/h.

Time to enjoy the seaside or mountain scenery.

France has 1,200 km of railways intended for tourist use, according to the Union of Tourist Railway Operators and Railway Museums (Unecto).

Each year, the hundred or so networks identified generate 3.7 million visits.
