The new edition of the car-free Sunday in Gmund as part of climate spring was far less popular than the original three years ago.

Gmund – Significantly fewer visitors came to the new edition of the car-free Sunday in Gmund at the weekend than at the first event in 2019: three years ago around 1800 visitors flocked to the train station and the Badviertel, this year the interest in the event was disappointing of the climate spring, the organizers from the working groups "Energy and Environment" and "Transport".

Car-free Sunday in Gmund: showed little interest in cycling culture

In the morning, Johann Schmid, head of energy and climate protection for the municipality of Gmund, who had planned the day of action under the motto "Great climate - mobile saddle festival", was still hoping for a large crowd.

After all, the car-free Sunday started hesitantly three years ago, until midday the people of Gmund stormed the snack and cake stands as well as the many information stands.

"On Sunday, the visitors only dribbled past sparsely throughout the day," Schmid summed up.

"The participation was disappointing - especially for the effort."

Schmid was able to get some air conditioning and cycling experts to present.

The ADFC was there with a traffic quiz.

Christian Stadler from the Rottacher Verkehrsverein had set up a bicycle skill course that participants could ride through with all kinds of bicycles and fun bikes.

Local bike suppliers and inventors of bikes and scooters brought the same bikes with them.

The consumer center offered energy advice.

The Fablab Oberland called for the invention of tools that make life easier for cyclists.

In addition to quizzes and animal skill races, the Finsterwalder pony gang also offered pony hikes.

The Dürnbach fire brigade provided the food.

Mobility offers from ponies to Rosi scooters

"From pony to Rosi scooter: Here you can find out about many mobility models," said Mayor Alfons Besel in greeting.

"It is important that we reclaim the road space, that we meet here, where cars usually drive, to exchange ideas." Topics included leasing offers for job bikes and the planned cycle connections between Otterfing and Gmund as well as Hausham and Gmund.

Schmid regretted that some of the participants from 2019 had canceled due to full order books - for example with the heating engineers and electricians who are currently equipping the valley roofs with photovoltaic systems - or a lack of capacity or had organized the day of action in Bad Wiessee.

Besel remained confident: "We are meeting a great deal of interest in energy and mobility issues." The municipality of Gmund is also on the right energetic path with its energy coaching, the energy use plan and the energy efficiency network, as well as being a bicycle-friendly municipality.

"That gives us courage that we can still achieve a lot."

As proof, 40 visitors went on a tour around the lake together with Richard Westerberger from the ADFC.

A police vehicle drove in front, the fire department behind.

So the cyclists could easily get through the traffic.

A little more than half of the cyclists completed the lap.

Some stayed at other climate spring stands, for example in Bad Wiessee, or cycled home.
