After an interview with Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht, there was speculation as to whether Nancy Faeser would return to state politics.
Faeser has now denied this.
In her own words, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser does not plan to give up her office prematurely in order to become the SPD's top candidate for the 2023 state elections in Hesse.
When
asked "Would you give up this office of Federal Minister of the Interior?", she answered "
Bild am Sonntag " with: "I don't intend to do that".
The newspaper asked Faeser about the statement made by Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht.
This had
said
t-online : "I'm counting on Nancy Faeser not only being the top candidate, but also the first Prime Minister in Hesse."
Christine Lambrecht: The Minister of Defense was initially interested in the Ministry of the Interior
As the
Süddeutsche Zeitung
reported, there had already been speculation in the past that the Minister of the Interior could return to state politics.
When Chancellor Olaf Scholz introduced his ministers, he was already being asked about Faeser's possible ambitions in Hesse.
At that time, Scholz did not give a clear answer.
Faeser didn't speak at all.
According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung
, the Federal Defense Minister and former Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht
also expressed interest in the Ministry of the Interior.
With her comments about her cabinet colleague, however, she did not want to allude to the fact that she would take over her post if Faeser resigned early.
Speaking of her role as Secretary of Defense, she said: “I have taken on the role of Secretary of Defense.
And anyone who knows me knows that I also fulfill the tasks I have taken on.”
Nancy Faeser: Your statements leave room for speculation
The SPD in Hesse has not yet announced a top candidate for the 2023 state elections.
As the
Süddeutsche Zeitung
wrote, Faeser said earlier this month at a party conference of the SPD Hessen: "My heart is in Hessen" and that she wanted to fight "that Hessen turns red again".
Faeser was re-elected state chairman at the party conference and congratulated, among other things, by Olaf Scholz via video message.
However, all of this does not mean that Faeser can stand in 2023.
