A colonel of the Revolutionary Guards, Iran's ideological army, was

"murdered"

on Sunday in eastern Tehran, we learned from official sources.

"Sayyad Khodai, a defender of the shrine, was assassinated in an armed attack by two motorcyclists on Mojahedin-e Eslam street in Tehran

," the official Irna news agency reported.

The term

"sanctuary defender"

refers to anyone working on behalf of the Islamic Republic in Syria and Iraq.

The Guardians, for their part, specified that the victim was a colonel.

They denounced in a press release published on their site, a “

terrorist act”

committed by

“elements linked to global arrogance”

(the United States and their allies, in the official phraseology of the Islamic Republic, editor’s note).

An investigation is underway to identify

“the attacker or attackers,”

the Guardians statement added.

The Irna agency published photos showing a man covered in blood, sitting in the driver's seat of a car whose windows had been smashed.

Sayyad Khodaï was hit by five bullets during this attack which occurred around 4 p.m. (11:30 GMT), while the colonel was returning home, according to the same source.

The Tasnim news agency for its part specified that Khodaï was

“close to his home”

when he was assassinated.

“His wife was the first person to discover the body

,” according to the same source.
