Königsdorf – For many years the Königsdorf bike park lay fallow.

With the help of the children and youth development association and the municipality, committed parents have now brought the area to new life.

Immediately after the opening of the park, the future users - dozens of children - took possession of their new adventure area.

Königsdorf's Mayor Rainer Kopnicky praised the initiative.

There are also other examples of municipalities that invested a lot of money in building a bike park that young people ultimately didn't use or only used occasionally.

The Königsdorfer Radlpark started its second life a few days ago with ice cream, cool music, official speeches and thanks.

The area at the end of Beuerberger Straße was deserted for several years.

Nature reclaimed almost everything that had previously been cultivated.

"On the one hand, a generation grew out of an interest in leisure activities like this," explained Hanspeter Schön from the children and youth development association for the wasteland.

On the other hand, the corona-related bans would have given the Radlpark the rest.

A new generation of children discovers the old bike park

A new generation of parents and children is now establishing itself in the village.

"This park is such a great thing that I was immediately enthusiastic about it," explains Diana Schwab.

The Königsdorfer managed to win a comrade-in-arms in Tanja Schneider and to appeal to and inspire a large number of parents, especially of children of daycare age.

With painstaking work, the almost impossible was achieved: next to the big hills, also known as kickers, they created small hills, so-called pump tracks.

"We want to enable the little ones to practice with their Pukys," said Schwab.

Incidentally, “Pukys” are running wheels and tricycles from the same brand.

Schwab received help not only from parents and the children and youth development association.

Citizens and the building yard work together

In order to enable the movement of tens of cubic meters of earth, she spoke straight to Mayor Kopnicky, who immediately found an open ear: "We think it's great when citizens not only have demands, but also initiate something themselves and get involved," explained the mayor.

Then the community would be happy to help.

Without further ado, employees from the building yard turned up and were able to help the parents do part of the work with their heavy equipment.

The trail has recently led into the adjacent forest, which Walter Weiss, known as the new commander of the Gelting fire brigade, made available free of charge.

"The children certainly won't eat the forest," Weiss sympathizes with the project.

The children belong in the forest, "and as far as I'm concerned, they could have it forever," says the Geltinger, who is happy about the "new residents" of his area.

The work on it does not end with the opening of the park: "It is a constant activity that hopefully never stops," comments Schön from the association.

In the past few days, three benches were added, which had been donated by the Königsdorfer Zimmerei Hans Schneider.

A tipi is also in the works.

"And I just saw that in the forest, branches were gathered into a tent shape," Weiss adds.

Königsdorfer Bikepark is actually called "Elfenwald"

By the way, he already has a name.

"We christened it Elfenwald," explains parent initiator Schwab.

She already has other plans: "I want to install an Instagram page with lots of beautiful photos." There should also be a virtual pinboard with information hanging on it.

"Many parents didn't even know about the project," she says.

That should change thanks to the Internet.

Because there is enough work in progress.

"Mowing will soon have to be done and stones and other obstacles will have to be removed, especially after a downpour."

The bike park will be open daily until October 31st.

By the way, big and small drivers are insured through the children and youth development association.

"Operated without a trainer or trainer, it is part of the open youth work, so to speak," explains Schön.

However, parents are responsible for their children.
