Cecilia Monzón woke up this Saturday remembering one of the lawyer's commandments, according to the decalogue of the Uruguayan jurist Eduardo J. Couture.
“Your duty is to fight for the right;
but the day you find right conflicting with justice, fight for justice,” she wrote on her Twitter account before adding, “Good morning, creatures of the west.”
Monzón was a lawyer, activist and feminist.
She was shot to death shortly after, while she was traveling in her truck in the municipality of San Pedro Cholula, in the metropolitan area of Puebla.
According to the first police reconstruction, it is a direct attack perpetrated by two assassins who were following her on a motorcycle.
The lawyer dealt mainly with cases of sexist and family violence and was known in Puebla for her public projection.
She was a municipal candidate for the Green Ecologist Party and worked as head of Social Development during the administration of Luis Arriaga, whom she denounced for gender-based political violence.
The local press recalls that she had received intimidation and in 2019 she had requested a protection scheme for death threats in vain.
The investigations of the crime are now in the hands of the State Prosecutor's Office, which has limited itself to reporting that it "carries out proceedings with the aim of clarifying the case."
The municipal president of San Pedro Cholula, Paola Angón, has condemned the femicide and has assured that her administration will work "to find the intellectual and material authors of this attack."
Monzón had a multitude of litigations defending women, but she also denounced the former deputy of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) Jorge Estefan Chidiac for signature falsification, according to Animal Politico reports.

In the semblance published on her blog, the criminal lawyer recounts that from a very young age she participated in "activities for the protection of animals and social charity, mainly for young people and women in vulnerable situations."
She was a PRI sympathizer and had different responsibilities as youth coordinator and general secretary of the Municipal Training Committee in San Pedro Cholula.
She was also a delegate of the Poblano Youth Institute of the territorial government.
The activist said she was "always inspired by the leadership" of her grandparents, Filemon Pérez Cázarez and Rafaela Menéndez del Río.
On Friday, the day before she was murdered, she went to the local Prosecutor's Office to ask why a personal case folder had not been prosecuted for a month.
She joked that just as she entered the agency's premises she had broken a bracelet with the Saint Benedict medal that she had just released.
This is how she related it on her social networks, in which she used to post combative messages and did not hide her opinions.
Dozens of organizations, feminist activists and platforms in defense of human rights have repudiated the murder, urging the authorities, Governor Miguel Barbosa and instances of the federal Executive such as the National Women's Institute not to let the crime go unpunished.
