I feel unbearable to read the news about the elderly waiting to be admitted to the hospital

Chen Yunya said that during the fifth wave of the epidemic, she felt unbearable to see the elderly waiting to be admitted to the hospital from different channels such as news. As a nursing student, she hoped to contribute, so she decided to go to the temporary care center to help take care of the confirmed elderly. Their responsibility is to monitor the situation of the elderly in the center, and immediately report any changes and send the elderly to the emergency room.

She mentioned that she was most impressed by the limited resources and equipment of the temporary care center, and the lack of personal cleaning equipment. As a nurse, seeing patients in bed, they would think that they would be more comfortable and their skin conditions would be better, so she proposed the introduction of rinse-free wipes. Allow the elderly who cannot take a bath to perform simple cleaning, and help the elderly improve the quality of care where feasible.

Seeing the patient is not too hard to be satisfied with a word to make the patient feel satisfied

Another student, He Aiqi, who came to the respite center to help take care of patients, hopes to apply what she has learned in school to help take care of the elderly in the center.

She mentioned that even though her family is very supportive of her decision, it is inevitable that she will be worried, but in fact, when she sees a patient, her heart will only focus on how to help them, and she will be satisfied when seeing the patient not too hard.

Ho Aiqi said that caring for the elderly is not only about taking care of their physical health, but also mental health. The elderly cannot communicate with other residents in the center due to epidemic prevention, and their life is very dull. The only people who can talk to them are medical staff, so a simple sentence A friendly greeting, such as "Are you going to eat or not today?" can make the elderly feel valued.

She mentioned that once arranged for an elder to have a video conversation with his wife outside, which made him feel better.

HKU uses VR technology to let students feel how patients feel

As for the work in the respite center, they never worried that they would not be able to cope with it, because they had previous experience in internships in nursing homes, and the School of Nursing has simulated learning, using mechanical patients to train how to deal with various conditions and requirements of patients.

Wang Wenbing, associate professor of the School of Nursing of the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong and course director of the Bachelor of Nursing and Elite Leaders Training Specialized Group, said that the mechanical patients in the school can simulate various vital signs, and nearly 100 cases have been designed for students to practice. He also believes that for nurses Empathy is very important, and the school will use VR technology to let students feel the feelings of patients to cultivate empathy.

The Department of Nursing at HKU has been one of the most popular programmes in JUPAS, and the QS Employer Reputation by Subject (by subject) has remained No. 1 in Hong Kong from 2019 to 2022.

Wang Wenbing pointed out that students who are enthusiastic and want to join the nursing industry are welcome to apply. He also said that the Department of Nursing emphasizes students' communication skills, interpersonal relationships, enthusiasm and insight. During the interview, try to highlight the above characteristics.
