The Catholic Men's Welfare Association has been running the dormitory in Gelbersdorf for 60 years.

Today the facility is more modern than ever.

Gelbersdorf

– When you walk through this beautiful, lovingly maintained green area with the houses in between, you feel like you are in a holiday resort.

In fact, the green oasis is in Gelbersdorf in the municipality of Gammelsdorf.

And there, in the Anton-Henneka-Haus, homeless men find a new home.

On Thursday, the 60th anniversary of the facility was celebrated with a Corona delay of one year.

Furnishings are more modern today and more important than ever.

Leader Tassilo Winhart: proud of the community.

The Gelbersdorf dormitory has 46 employees and 62 residents, who are not only protected from homelessness, but also have the opportunity to start a new career in the workshops.

Appropriately enough, the guests at the anniversary ceremony received small pots of herbs that are grown in Gelbersdorf as a gift.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Tassilo Winhart, the head of the facility, emphasized the pride in the Gelbersdorf cycle: "It makes sense that we eat what we harvest here." into homelessness could happen to anyone.

Especially now, in the geopolitically difficult times with pandemic, war and inflation, everything can go even faster - which makes the Anton-Henneka-Haus even more important.

District Administrator Helmut Petz thanked the Catholic Men's Welfare Association for a job that could not be offset against money.

The guests verbally tipped their hats to the work being done in the small town of Gelbersdorf.

"People need more than benefits in kind and donations," said District Administrator Helmut Petz in his welcoming speech.

And it is precisely with this humanity that one takes care of these men.

"The reasons for living here are as different as the residents themselves," said Angele Jessel, regional coordinator for homelessness, who represented the district of Upper Bavaria.

In the Gelbersdorf facility, people's fates are addressed and there can be no blanket offer for these needs.

Mayor recalls the early days full of unfounded prejudices

The mayor of Gammelsdorf, Raimunda Menzel, who is known for her sunny disposition, humorously recalled the first days of the facility in a rural area where new things are always viewed critically: "Back then in Gammelsdorf they still said that you should keep far away from the Gelbersdorfer..."

Two employees noted in a skit that Gelbersdorf is much nicer than Bibione.

These prejudices have long since been eliminated and everyone agrees that this house is an asset to the community.

"You offer therapy and aftercare," said Menzel, "You are the rock in the surf.

And I am very proud that we have such a facility in our community.”

With Manfred Maurer, a resident then stepped up to the lectern.

Among other things, he gave the local chief and the district administrator a homework assignment on the way home: "Maybe we can also discuss a small bus connection for Gelbersdorf."
