An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale struck off Japan's Ibaraki Prefecture today, without reports of human or material damage.
The Japan Meteorological Agency announced that the quake occurred at 36.8 degrees north latitude and 141.5 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 30 km, noting that no tsunami warning has yet been issued.
The intensity of the tremor reached five in some parts of Ibaraki and Fukushima prefectures, according to the Japanese seismic intensity scale, which has a peak of seven.
Japan is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes are active that stretches across Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Basin.
