Ambassador-at-Large in the Russian Foreign Ministry Nikolai Korchunov affirmed that Asian countries from the BRICS group and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization are interested in cooperating with Russia in the Arctic.
The Russia Today website quoted Korchunov, who is also the chair of the Committee of Senior Officials of the Arctic Council, as saying that “the countries of the Asian region show great interest in developing cooperation in the northern region,” explaining that the talk is about countries that show accelerated rates of economic development, many of which are members of a group BRICS and in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
He pointed out that this interest is based on strategic calculations and has long-term cooperation prospects.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that Russia is open to cooperation with all countries to work in the Arctic.
