Schleswig-Holstein: FDP votes for coalition negotiations with the CDU

The CDU triumphed in the state elections in Schleswig-Holstein – and still wanted to continue governing in a Jamaican coalition. The Greens rejected it. The FDP is now hoping for a two-party coalition.

Three days after negotiations for a new Jamaica coalition failed, the FDP wants to negotiate a possible coalition with the CDU.

The delegates of the state main committee, a kind of small party congress, voted unanimously in Neumünster.

One wants to make Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) a corresponding offer.

“The overlaps in content between the FDP and CDU are extremely large,” said FDP country chief Heiner Garg.

Both parties wanted to build on the "successful" Jamaica policy and move the country forward.

"The Greens, on the other hand, want a change in policy," says Garg.

It needs "a stable government that relies on progress and reason".

"The CDU must now decide where to go," said the FDP country chief.

The FDP lost votes, the CDU and the Greens benefited

The FDP, which has previously been in government, lost around 5.1 percentage points in the May 8 election.

The Greens had gained around 5.4 percentage points, the CDU under Prime Minister Daniel Günther even 11.4 percentage points.

The SPD had lost 11.3 percentage points.

The CDU will decide on Monday how to proceed.

The state executive advises whether the party invites the Greens or the FDP to negotiations on forming a government.

Günther was for Jamaica

Prime Minister Günther initially relied on a tripartite alliance with both parties, which has governed together since 2017 - although only one partner would be necessary for a government majority.

However, the Greens rejected this plan last week.

There is "no common basis" for such a coalition in which one of the partners is not needed, said Deputy Prime Minister Monika Heinold (Greens).

A two-party alliance is more desirable.

After the Jamaica option failed, the CDU leadership announced that it would now choose between the Greens and the FDP.

With 34 out of a total of 69 seats, the Union just barely missed an absolute majority.
