The public committee for determining payments to MKs is expected to convene in the presence of the MK from the Likud, who in principle refuses to receive a salary • The Knesset accuses: "His decision forces professionals to break the law"

Senior Likud member against Knesset accountant:

"Israel Today" has learned that in light of Barkat's refusal to receive a salary from the Knesset, the public committee for determining salaries and payments of Knesset members will convene tomorrow (Monday) to discuss his presence with the Knesset accountant.

The Knesset accountant claims that Barkat refuses to accept his salary, causing him to break the law.

A letter from the public committee states that "this is a problematic matter which puts the professionals in the Knesset in a position of non-compliance with the provisions of the law."

As mentioned, Barkat entered the Knesset for the first time in April 2019, and since then, refuses to transfer his account details to the Knesset to transfer the monthly salary.

Barkat has accumulated a salary of about NIS 2 million from the Knesset.

In response to the Knesset's claims, Barkat is working to create a narrow bypass and has submitted a bill according to which a Knesset member can waive his salary.

The explanatory memorandum to the law reads: "The proposed amendment allows Knesset members who wish to do so to waive their salary, in whole or in part, as well as additional payments other than the basic salary, and to notify the Knesset accountant. Valid for the period in which the Knesset member announced the waiver, and at the rate he announced.

"It will be clarified that the waiver of the salary or a rate from it will be valid in that year in relation to all the conditions derived from it, so that it will lead, among other things, to reducing the basis for calculating the amount set aside for the MK, such as a provident fund and pension fund."

MK Nir Barkat said that "it is a great privilege for me to serve the people of Israel for one shekel a year, as I did for a decade as mayor of Jerusalem, as I do today as a Knesset member and as I will do in any public position I fill in the future.

My father blessed me in my youth that I would pay a lot of taxes to the state so I could work in the public service for one shekel a year.

Thank God, I was blessed that his blessing would be fulfilled.

The bill I submitted will allow elected officials who are interested in it, to waive their salaries.

I am proud to work for the people of Israel for one shekel a year and I will continue to do so. "
