This Sunday it all boils down to this: A victory for Manchester City against Aston Villa at home, in the final round of the English top-flight season, guarantees that Pep Guardiola's side will retain their championship crown. PremierLeague.

However, a draw or defeat for City would allow Liverpool a chance to come out on top and snatch the title from the defending champions.

Three years ago, City edged out Liverpool for the Premier League title by one point, and they are favorites to do it again.

Since drawing 2-2 with Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on April 10, City comfortably won their next three home games, scoring 13 goals.

Ahead of Sunday's matches, Guardiola's side have also had a bye week, while Aston Villa played on Thursday and drew 1-1 with Burnley.

Liverpool were also in action in midweek, beating Southampton 2-1.

The Premier League is Manchester City's last chance to win titles this season.

The figures indicate that Liverpool would beat Wolves at Anfield on Sunday.

Since losing to Leicester on December 28, Liverpool are unbeaten, winning 14 of their last 17 league games.

If Liverpool manage to win the title, Jürgen Klopp's side have a chance to secure an unprecedented quadruple if they beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final on May 28 at the Stade de France in Paris.

"We've essentially reached 'the final' of everything we've competed for," Klopp said before Sunday's game against Wolves.

"Two domestic cups, the European Cup, and taking the Premier League campaign to the last round is the equivalent of reaching a final. To say how proud I am of our team and our club is an understatement."

Ten years ago, City almost made a major disaster in a similarly circumstance home game against Queens Park Rangers, until Sergio Aguero made his mark in the 94th minute.

With City trailing 2–1 in the 92nd minute but needing a win over QPR to win their first English top division title in 44 years, Edin Dzeko equalised.

Then, at 93:20 in the final minute of the game, a composed Agüero pushed his way through QPR's frenzied defense and fired a shot to secure victory and clinch the 2011/12 Premier League.

Aguero's goal has been immortalized in the form of a statue outside the Etihad Stadium, which opened earlier this month.

"Fight until the end"

Sunday's game at the Etihad has the potential to offer plenty of plot twists.

Aston Villa's manager is former Liverpool great Steven Gerrard, who would surely love to help deliver a title to a club he failed to win it with as a player.

The current Aston Villa squad also includes two former Liverpool players: Philippe Coutinho and Danny Ings.

Pep Guardiola has guided Manchester City to three Premier League titles since becoming manager of the club.

"It's more difficult [to win the Premier League]," Guardiola told City's website.

"There are many weeks, games, fights with injuries and bad moments, tough rivals.

"Success is being there all the time in the last five years, except the year Liverpool were unstoppable," Guardiola added, referring to Klopp's team that won the Premier League title in the 2019/2020 season.

"Every day when you fight in the Premier League and fight to the end, it gives you happiness. You are happier when you win."

"It's not a drink, it's a routine. Doing a routine is the hardest thing in our lives."

After 370 Premier League games this season, eight of Sunday's 10 games have implications for the title, qualification for next season's European competitions or relegation in the championship.

Tottenham Hotspur can secure a place in the Champions League by avoiding defeat to already relegated Norwich, denying Arsenal a chance in the process.

With Norwich City and Watford already relegated, Burnley must equal Leeds United's result to ensure safety in the Premier League.

But if this season has taught us anything, it's to expect the unexpected at both ends of the table.

According to Opta, this season is the first in the history of the competition where it is mathematically possible for every position to change heading into the final round of matches.
