Towards escalation? Washington is considering sending special forces to Kiev Israel today

2022-05-22T19:22:25.036Z

U.S. military sources told the Wall Street Journal that the possibility of sending fighters to protect the U.S. embassy in the country has been tarnished.

Senior U.S. military and Secretary of State officials are considering sending a special force to protect the U.S. embassy in Kiev, the Wall Street Journal reported tonight (Sunday).

The United States Embassy in the Ukrainian capital reopened earlier this month after being evacuated ahead of the Russian invasion of the country, fearing the Russian military would succeed in capturing the capital.

The American newspaper claimed that the move was aimed at balancing the need to protect the lives of embassy staff and diplomatic staff, in the face of the desire to avoid further escalation in the ongoing war in the country.

According to security sources, President Biden has not yet accepted the offer to move special units to Ukrainian soil.

If the decision is made, it will be the first time the United States has sent combat forces to an Eastern European country since the Russian invasion began in late February, and a departure from President Biden's promise not to send American troops into the country.

Currently, the U.S. Diplomatic Service is content with the protection of United States Embassy defense force personnel, but in the past U.S. embassies in conflict zones have been protected by U.S. special forces or the Marine Corps.

Meanwhile, the Russian army continues to advance towards the siege of the cities of Svrodonetsk and Lisyshansk in the western part of the Luhansk region.

Despite the intensifying concentration of the Russian army's strength, the progress of the forces has slowed significantly in recent days and sources in Ukraine report heavy losses of the Russian army during the fighting.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced that Ukraine would not agree to any territorial concessions under a three-month ceasefire agreement in the country that resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and unprecedented destruction in twenty-first century Europe.

The Ukrainian decision reflects the continued stalemate in talks between the parties after an attempt was reached to reach an agreement at an earlier stage of the Russian invasion of the country.
