Russia is apparently considering exchanging captured fighters from the Ukrainian Azov regiment for pro-Russian businessman Viktor Medvedchuk.

"We will consider the issue," said the Russian MP and negotiator in the negotiations with Kyiv, Leonid Slutski, on Saturday (May 21), according to the RIA Novosti news agency.

Medvedchuk is considered a confidante of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Ukrainian politician and entrepreneur, who is one of the richest people in the country, was accused of treason in Ukraine last year and placed under house arrest.

Shortly after the start of the Russian military operation in Ukraine on February 24, he went into hiding before he was arrested in mid-April.

On Friday, Russia reported the “complete liberation” of the Azovstal steelworks in Mariupol, Ukraine.

The last soldiers in the industrial complex, including members of the Azov regiment, surrendered, the Russian army said.

According to information from Moscow, a total of 2,439 Ukrainian soldiers from the Azovstal steelworks have been taken prisoner by the Russians since May 16.

Among them are 78 women, according to the pro-Russian separatists.

According to the Russian state agency TASS, the head of the Donetsk separatists, Denis Puschilin, said on Saturday evening that foreigners had also been taken into Russian captivity.

He didn't give a number at first.

According to the Ukrainian general staff, the Russian army is currently preparing offensives on the cities of Slovjansk and Lyman in eastern Ukraine.

This was reported on Saturday (May 21) by the Kyiv Independent news portal.

There were also attacks on several cities in the Kharkiv region.

According to information from the military leadership, Russian attacks on the towns of Lypove, Vasylivka, Marjinka and Nowomykhaylivka had previously been unsuccessful.

In the Luhansk Oblast, on the other hand, the Russian military succeeded in destroying a bridge.

The structure, which connected the cities of Sieverodonetsk and Lysychansk via the Don tributary Siverskyi Donets, was destroyed in 2014 as part of Russian attacks and rebuilt in 2016.

Lambrecht had officially announced that none of the 343 Marder-type armored personnel carriers were superfluous.
