The Union has not left any big footprints in the Ministry of Defense - one more reason for Chancellor Scholz to think about a new appointment, comments Christian Deutschländer.

Munich – In the meantime, several personal details have been added to the huge package of worries that Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been dragging with him through no fault of his own since taking office.

A problem is growing at two central posts: Neither the defense minister nor the interior minister are convincing.

Christine Lambrecht could go down in history as the head of department under whom the Bundeswehr was no longer shriveled to pieces and pushed to the fringes of society - but she only stumbled from breakdown to breakdown.

Nancy Faeser could be a strong, influential, conciliatory security minister - instead, she instigates nonsense debates that the term "homeland should be positively reinterpreted" and otherwise prepares her SPD prime ministerial candidacy in Hesse.

Germany and the Ukraine war: Scholz should dismiss Lambrecht

That is not enough.

The SPD's grab for the central security departments was a smart move, even before the Ukraine crisis and even more so afterwards.

The Social Democrats as the protective power of the "little people", the middle, for whom security is more important than gender-speak debates: That can work well, but only with credible ministers who are passionate about their issues, instead of just thinking they are on a transit post.

Especially since, to put it politely, the CDU and CSU departments have not left too many footprints in the past decade.

Scholz should soon fill the Ministry of Defense, purely on the basis of qualifications;

and at least get his interior minister back on track.

The chancellor does not perform in such a way that he would outshine these failures, and such personnel problems cannot be waited out, especially in a world situation like this.
