Argentina announced today that it has detected a suspected case of monkeypox, amid growing global concern about an increase in cases in Europe and elsewhere of the viral infection most common in West and Central Africa.
Reuters quoted the Argentine Ministry of Health as saying in a statement that the patient suspected of being infected with monkeypox is a resident of Buenos Aires province and has symptoms compatible with the disease and had recently traveled to Spain, noting that the patient is in good condition and isolated during the tests.
And the World Health Organization announced yesterday that there are 92 confirmed cases and 28 suspected cases of monkeypox from 12 countries, and that it will provide more guidance and recommendations in the coming days for countries on how to limit the spread of monkeypox.
Monkeypox is a contagious disease that is usually mild and endemic in parts of West and Central Africa and spreads through close contact, so it can be contained relatively easily through measures such as self-isolation and personal hygiene.
