At a post-game news conference, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard was asked by reporters if the club's players walked off the pitch safely.

Aston Villa confirmed in a statement that Olsen is "completely fine", saying he took a hit to the back of the head, but the club are unsure if the incident was on purpose, according to Sky Sports News.

CNN has contacted Aston Villa and the Football Association.

Guardiola was asked about the incident after the match, saying: "I'm very sorry... I'm very sorry on behalf of the club for [Robin] Olsen and Aston Villa.

The City manager said he was unaware of the intentions behind the action, but continued: "It's always hard to understand why people react that way and can't celebrate, be happy and not do these kinds of things."

"I don't know how (to stop it)... You can't put 1,000 guards or police to control there. We're very sorry. It's the bad news today."
