A burst water pipe at the Isartor caused massive traffic disruptions on Monday afternoon.
Streets and sidewalks were flooded there.
That was not planned: huge amounts of water gushed onto the street at the Isartor on Monday afternoon.
The intersection between Isartorplatz and Thierschstraße was completely flooded: sidewalks sagged and were under water, mud spilled over the road.
The result: traffic chaos in the middle of the city center.
All of this was triggered by a burst water pipe on the construction site there.
The Stadtwerke will confirm this on request.
A spokesman could not specifically name what went wrong during the construction work, whether the water pipe was dredged or drilled into.
Tram 16 has to be diverted
Either way, the mishap caused massive traffic delays for hours.
The area had to be cordoned off and tram line 16 diverted.
It was still unclear yesterday afternoon how long the clean-up work would take.
The Munich transport company informed its customers that there will probably be disruptions on the tram by Tuesday afternoon.
During the time of the diversion, tram 16 was not able to reach the stops Müllerstraße, Reichenbachplatz, Isartor and Mariannenplatz.
