South African authorities announced today that more than 300 people have been evacuated from their homes as a result of renewed heavy rain, floods and mudslides in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of the country, after weeks of severe flooding that killed more than 400 people and displaced more than 40,000 others. .
"The rains and floods have largely destroyed homes, roads and electrical infrastructure in the northern parts of the province," KwaZulu-Natal authorities and emergency personnel were quoted by the Associated Press as saying.
The province of KwaZulu-Natal, which includes the port city of Durban, remains on high alert, with warnings of more rain in some areas.
"The new emergency has exhausted local officials who have called for help from the South African national government," Sifu Hlumuka, the provincial minister for local government in the province, told a news briefing.
According to officials, the floods that swept KwaZulu-Natal last month caused losses estimated at 1.5 billion dollars in property.
