The former head of the British intelligence service estimates that Russian President Vladimir Putin will lose power by next year and be hospitalized in a medical facility to treat a long-term illness.

Sir Richard Dirlab was the head of the UK Secret Intelligence Service, also known as MI6, from 1999 to 2004 and he raised his predictions about Putin last Wednesday during an episode of the One Decision podcast, which he hosts.

"I'm really going to endanger my neck. I think he will disappear by 2023. But probably into a sanatorium (a medical institution for prolonged hospitalization), from which he will not emerge as Russia's leader," he said, adding that the sanatorium would be the way to overthrow Putin.

Businessinsider reported that Dirlab's forecast is consistent with other recent reports suggesting Putin is ill and likely to lose power soon.

Christo Grozev, a security expert in Russia, said last week that senior Kremlin security officials believe the war in Ukraine is "lost" and that Putin is losing his grip on power.

The head of Ukraine's intelligence chief, General Kirilo Budanov, told Sky News last week that Putin was in "a very bad psychological and physical condition and is very ill."

Bodanov also said he was "optimistic" that Ukraine would win and that the war "would end by the end of the year."

Former British spy Christopher Steele also recently said that according to his sources in Russia Putin is seriously ill and regularly leaves appointments for medical treatment, which contributes to "increasing disorder in the Kremlin".

Of course, no report can be confirmed on Putin's health, especially due to the secrecy on the Russian side and the misinformation on the Ukrainian side.

Rumors about Putin's illness include diseases such as dementia, Parkinson's disease and leukemia.

Dirlab also said that there is no regulated succession plan in the Russian leadership, but said that if Putin did indeed enter a medical facility, the most likely person to come to power in his place is Nikolai Petroshav, secretary of the Russian Security Council.
