The Greek Coast Guard announced today that it has thwarted an attempt to smuggle 600 illegal immigrants coming from Turkey through the Aegean Sea, describing this attempt as the largest this year.
AFP quoted a spokesman for the Greek Coast Guard as saying: Five boats and four boats left the Turkish coast simultaneously this morning and were in Turkish waters near the Greek islands of Chios and Samos, noting that the Greek patrols identified the locations of these boats and warned them not to proceed with the trip.
It is noteworthy that Athens accuses the Turkish regime of not taking sufficient measures against smugglers who send illegal immigrants on rickety boats in violation of the 2016 agreement between Ankara and the European Union.
