Robert Habeck warns of an escalation of the food crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine.

To prevent this, all countries would have to work together.

Davos - Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has called for international cooperation in view of an impending global food crisis as a result of the Russian war in Ukraine.

"Unless we find another solution, we will have a major shortage of global calories next year," said the Economics Minister on the fringes of the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

This food crisis will specifically hit regions that are not among the wealthiest or most stable.

"And if we respond in such a way that every country only takes care of itself, i.e. stocks up its own supplies, then this crisis will escalate," warns the Green politician.

Habeck calls for a global trade order

Habeck spoke out in favor of global cooperation and open markets.

"And of course we are also required to reduce our own, sometimes somewhat exuberant, consumption of food," he says.

Instead of only reflecting on oneself, a new global trading order must be created: “Hold on to the fact that we interact with each other globally, do so in solidarity, fairly and justly and for the benefit of the people and not just for the benefit of a few companies’ profits. "dpa
