After a two-year break, Freising's vintage car friends went on their hop tour again.

The rush at the starting point in Freising was huge.

- "And it runs and runs and runs": The well-known advertising slogan of the VW Beetle was not only stuck to a suitable car, but also went extremely well with the Sunday morning in the center of Freising.

There were more than 80 vintage cars to be admired from Untere Hauptstrasse up to Marienplatz before the parade set off in the direction of Hopfenland.

Two prominent guests were also there: the Freising district administrator Helmut Petz with the start number 1 and a "time traveler" with his DeLorean including flux compensator.

“Driving a classic car is actually environmentally friendly”

Shortly after 8 a.m., the first lovers of old automobiles were busy parking in the city center - here a VW Beetle from the 1960s, there a red Fiat Spider from 1981. "It's just all there." , explained Peter Krayer from the board of the Oldtimerfreunde Freising, who was delighted that the hops tour, which has long been known well beyond the district borders, worked again this year after it had to fall into the water twice because of Corona.

A tour that will celebrate its 25th anniversary in two years and is extremely popular with classic car enthusiasts from near and far, as the registrations of 85 vehicles proved again this year.

"There are a few puzzles to be solved on the journey and at the end there are of course trophies for the winners," said Krayer, for whom one thing was important when it came to possible criticism of "old combustion engines": "Driving vintage cars is actually environmentally friendly because we still use them drive old cars and thus not use up any resources when buying a new one.” In addition, the classic classic car enthusiast would only be on the road very little and therefore hardly use any fuel, therefore not polluting the environment as much.

This was confirmed by Bernd Moser from Pfaffenhofen, who drove his 1960 Beetle on this tour for the first time.

“My first car was a Beetle, so I bought another one – as a sort of reminiscence of my past life.”

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Awaited with great curiosity, the oldest model of this year's tour also arrived: a bright red Fiat Balilla from 1934. "It drives around 100 kilometers per hour, at least on paper," explained the proud owner Andi Peyerl from Erding, of his Got the car from Italy and partially prepared it himself.

He was taking part in this year's hops tour for the first time and hoped, like everyone else, above all not to have a breakdown on the way.

A few cars further: a Shelby Cobra, built in 1965, with a whopping 400 hp under the hood.

"He's driving a 290 top, but not with me," said Cobra owner Mathias Hohme from Landshut, who was just clipping the Hopfentour sign to his vehicle.

A VW Bully was also part of the wide range of venerable vehicles.

A total of 85 vintage car owners took part in the hop tour, which took place for the first time since the outbreak of the Corona virus.

"Now you're going to ask yourself: How does that go together - classic car driving and climate protection, right?" said District Administrator Helmut Petz, leaning against a Mercedes SL with the starting number 1, which he incidentally borrowed from a neighbor.

What is completely clear for Petz: "The energy transition must come 100 percent with solar and wind, but we don't want to castigate anyone because of that.

All in all, it just has to be right.” Petz’s love of vintage cars and beautiful vehicles was awakened in his childhood: “Playing with the car quartet,” as the district administrator said.

"Back to the future" with the time travel vehicle

However, Axel Speh from Neufahrn's love of a very special automobile was not sparked by playing cards, but by a Hollywood film, namely the blockbuster "Back to the Future".

With his time travel vehicle, a DeLorean with the classic gullwing doors, including a flux compensator in the interior and other film equipment on board, the Neufahrner was of course the eye-catcher par excellence.

All participants of this year's hops tour agreed unanimously that the excursion organized by Freising's vintage car friends is one of the most beautiful and comfortable ones far and wide.

And the citizens of Freising also had a lot of fun with the very special car show: young and old alike strolled through the parking spaces in glorious weather and were amazed at how beautiful and different cars used to be.
