Huge rush for 9-euro ticket: Bahn sells hundreds of thousands of tickets within a few hours

Just a few hours after the nine-euro ticket went on sale, the rush is huge.

The DB regional boss speaks of a "historically large access" to the sales systems.

Munich/Berlin - The nine-euro ticket is likely to be this year's bestseller at the ticket machines.

According to its own statements, Deutsche Bahn (DB) has already sold over 200,000 nine-euro tickets in the first few hours after the start of sales on Monday.

"We are currently experiencing historically large access to our sales systems," said the head of the company's subsidiary DB Regio, Jörg Sandvoß.

He has “not the faintest idea” how many passengers will use the offer overall.

"The nine-euro ticket is a unique opportunity for local public transport and climate protection in Germany," explained Sandvoß.

The preparations at the railway were in full swing.

"We're getting ready and moving literally everything we have - trains, buses, service people."

According to DB Regio, more than 50 additional trains are available.

According to Sandvoß, 60,000 additional seats are available every day.

The offer on tourist routes is also to be increased on the public holidays.

The additional capacities are ultimately limited by the maximum number of trains available, said Sandvoss.

In particular, the carriage of bicycles, which is not included in the nine-euro ticket, cannot always be guaranteed.

Delays must also be expected when the trains are very busy.

The nine-euro ticket is available for the months of June, July and August.

Buyers can use the trams, subways, suburban trains and ferries of public transport, as well as public buses and trains in local and regional transport, throughout Germany.
