At least five people have been killed and 80 injured in the collapse of the "Metropol" building in the center of the city of Abadan in southwestern Iran, the state news agency "Tasanim" reported tonight (Monday).
According to the report, the northern part of the large building collapsed for an unknown reason at a time when many of the building’s occupants were in their home.
According to the suspicion, several passers-by found under the building were also hit by the rubble collapse.
20 ambulances and hundreds of rescue workers arrived at the scene.
The governor of the city of Abaden told the Tassanim news agency that the building was under construction but part of it was inhabited and that there are currently no exact figures on casualties in the disaster.
"All the rescue forces at the scene of the disaster are doing their job on the best side," the governor told the news agency.
The city of Abdan has in recent days been the focus of protracted demonstrations against the Iranian authorities, due to the high cost of living and the political repression of the residents of the Ahwaz region, most of whose residents are Arabs and many of whom oppose Tehran rule over the country.
