Opinion | "Dimensions for Studies" is the criminal paving | Israel today

2022-05-23T08:47:59.131Z

It is clear to everyone that the storm around "dimensions for studies" is not a value dispute but mainly a political maneuver • In the digital age, employment will not always require an academic degree

Rivers of ink and an infinity of words spilled over the "Dimensions for Studies" law.

The coalition wants the state to fund 66%, the opposition offers 100% funding, the non-Zionist or anti-Zionist parties - whether they are in the coalition or not - oppose a law that benefits Israeli Defense Forces soldiers, and the city of Jerusalem is embarrassed.

True, it does not make sense for a government supported by parties for which service in the IDF is a crime to turn to the opposition whenever it wants to advance a Zionist agenda.

But let me get out of the framing that has been forced on us on the subject, give up populism in the penny and deny the sacred principle, which assumes that the dispute between right and left revolves around funding rates only.

In my opinion, paving soldiers for academia in 2022 is an anachronistic, unhelpful and uneconomic act.

Anachronistic: First of all, because in 2022, paving the way for academia, in a world where the skills acquired in the field are of interest to employers, is something that does not correspond with reality.

Surveys published in recent years have shown that most of the ten most sought-after positions today require higher education, but not necessarily a full academic degree.

Positions requiring intermediate skills account for 40% of all OECD jobs, and the demand for them is growing.

In the digital age, employment will not always require an academic degree but will rely heavily on the continuous development of skills, as the new technology has penetrated even most of the traditional roles.

Want to secure an employment future for our heroic soldiers?

Give them the freedom to choose what to study and what to specialize in!

Build training programs with employers!

Do not be alarmed by the concept of "vocational education"!

Second, it is an unhelpful and uneconomic move.

We are all witnessing the inflation of first degrees in Israel and their relative decline in value.

I do not even enter the black pit called the humanities.

Even high-tech prefers a person who has gained concrete experience over a blown-up degree.

Not to mention the companies that train themselves the employees they have selected not necessarily on the basis of degrees, but mainly on the basis of skills.

The State of Israel invests about five billion shekels a year in subsidizing tuition in academia, and perhaps a tenth of that in vocational training.

This is exactly the opposite of the current trend in developed countries such as Switzerland and Germany, where a successful internship, accompanied by an employer, is considered more than an impressive result in a theoretical test.

Want to help our amazing soldiers find themselves in a changing world of employment?

Pay them a fair wage, and again, let them choose!

It is clear to everyone that the storm around "dimensions for studies" is not a value dispute but mainly a political maneuver.

But the storm also has a positive side: perhaps thanks to it we will begin to recalculate a trajectory when it comes to the transition from the military to the world of employment.

Academy is not the only default.

Enough of this lie!

Were we wrong?

Fixed!
