Queen Elizabeth II (96) was accompanied by her youngest son Prince Edward (58), who was supposed to take on the royal task on her behalf.
But the regent decided on a spontaneous surprise appearance due to unrestricted mobility.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson (57) and London Mayor Sadiq Khan (51) welcomed the royals, which caused a crowd at Paddington station.
Dressed in bright yellow, the Queen was hard to miss.

Many members of the press were also present, including journalist and royal correspondent for The Times of London, Valentine Low.
He tweeted several pictures of the monarch, including the now-viral snap, which captioned it: "The Queen looked good in yellow."
An unidentified man in the background of the photo came to the fore in fan comments shortly after.
His head peeks out from behind a wall, which looks confusingly similar to US actor Tom Hanks in the successful film "Forrest Gump".

After the first question from a user: "Has anyone else seen Forrest Gump in the background?", there was soon no stopping.
Fans hilariously enjoyed themselves: "I had to zoom in really close to see if this is Forrest Gump," one wrote, while someone, alluding to a famous line from the film, added, "Mom used to say to the Queen meeting is like a box of chocolates.” The Oscar-winner, who won the film's “Best Actor” trophy, also received direct inquiries: “@tomhanks, is that you?” the message read.

However, resourceful fans quickly found out that it is unlikely that Hanks' father of four was personally at the station.
He and his son Chet, 31, were spotted at a Dodgers baseball game in Los Angeles earlier this week, so it seemed unlikely that he'd suddenly found himself hanging around the London underground.
