"Holy Saint Nicholas, protect us from the flood and stormy weather": According to Gaby Rüth (3rd from left) from the association Flößerstraße Wolfratshausen, this is how the raftsmen prayed to the patron saint of the Nikolauskapelle in Geretsried.

Florian Sachers (left), chairman of the interest group for the preservation of the Nikolauskapelle, explained the history of the church.

Geretsried

– What does the Nikolauskapelle have to do with rafting?

Well, quite a bit.

Along with Saint Nepomuk, Saint Nicholas is considered the patron saint of raftsmen.

And on the way back from Munich, where they had brought their goods from the Isarwinkel, they passed the little church on today's B11 and asked God's blessing for their dangerous work.

On the way to Munich and on towards the Danube, the Isar raftsmen mainly took up lime from the lime kilns in Geretsried.

Gaby Rüth, Sabrina Schwenger and Hermann Paetzmann from the Wolfratshauser Verein Flößerstraße recently showed the connection between rafting and the Nikolauskapelle with a lecture in the Geiger inn opposite the Nikolauskapelle.

Florian Sachers, chairman of the interest group for the preservation of the Nikolauskapelle, had previously invited to a tour of the church.

The joint action of the two clubs was organized by Eleonora Graf from the city's tourism office.

The chapel is first mentioned in 1315

The Nikolaus chapel was first mentioned in 1315 as "St. Niclas's church" in the "Matricula Conradia".

In 1722 - according to old church records - it was rebuilt as an octagonal building in the Baroque style.

In addition to the foundation walls, the red brick tiles, the plain wooden benches - only about five on each side - and the wrought-iron door lock are certainly from the early days.

The altar, the wooden cross on the wall to the right, the Stations of the Cross images on the side walls and other furnishings were later reconstructed based on old models.

Above the altar is a painting depicting Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra.

On September 18, 1722, the Freising prince-bishop Johann Eckher von Kapfing and Lichteneck consecrated the newly built church.

At that time it was one of the eleven branch churches of the powerful parish of Königsdorf.

Today it belongs to the Catholic parish of Maria Hilf in Geretsried.

According to Florian Sachers, the 300th anniversary of the dedication will be celebrated in September.

At the same time, the roof is to be extensively renovated this year.

It has to be re-covered with larch shingles.

In total, damage was found in 72 places on the roof.

The Church Foundation of Maria Hilf estimates the costs, including combating woodworm on the altar and pews, at 400,000 euros.

The interest group hopes for financial support from the Archbishop's Ordinariate and the city, as well as generous donations - after all, the pretty chapel is Geretsried's landmark.

Searching for traces: The raftsman's trade is not only encountered in Wolfratshausen at every turn.

It hangs in the Gasthof Geiger, whose name also goes back to a raftsman.

Gaby Rüth from the Flößerstraße association explained that it played a very important role at the time of rafting.

There was a raft landing not only in Wolfratshausen, but also in Geretsried.

This is where the lime burners brought their finished goods.

According to the field maps from 1863, a lime kiln stood on the south side of Tattenkofener Straße near the Geiger inn.

It was built by the Orterer farmers.

"But it must not have been in operation for long, because with the advent of industrial lime production around 1900 and cement, it was no longer worthwhile to run it," says Gaby Rüth.

The "Lange Weg" or the Kalkofenstraßerl, as the path was called in the 20th century, was the shortest connection from the farms and from the lime kiln to the landing place of the raftsmen on the Isar.

Lime, but also agricultural products, were floated downriver from the Lände.

The path still exists today.

However, it is interrupted by the cemetery fence and Tattenkofener Straße.

The end of the Kalkofenstraße is at the old forest service hut, the so-called Zehnerhütte, on the Isar high bank.

The namesake of the Gasthof Geiger was also a raftsman: in 1896 Thaddäus Geiger from Wolfratshausen took over the inn by marriage.

His descendants still run it today and cherish the historical objects in the rooms, such as a miniature raft, rafters' certificates and paintings.

The ensemble of chapel, inn and farms - often referred to as the nucleus of Geretsried - has a connection to rafting in many ways.
