Ski World Cup 2017: Decision made on Wednesday - candidate Garmisch-Partenkirchen is self-confident

It should work this time.

After the 2020 bankruptcy, Garmisch-Partenkirchen wants to host the 2027 World Ski Championships.

The municipality has to assert itself against three competitors.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – It's here again, the big day: May 25th.

In the late afternoon, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is all about the Alpine Ski World Championships.

In October 2020 there was a strong slap in the face in the struggle for such a major event, when the World Games for 2025 went to Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Austria.

The market town and the Swiss competitor from Crans-Montana each received only one of the 14 votes at the time.

The bankruptcy was quickly checked off in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and the decision to try again was soon made.

So it's now about the World Cup in February 2027. In addition to the two candidates, who are competing for the second time, Narvik/Norway and Soldeu/Andorra have entered the ring.

The exit?

Nobody dares to make a judgment in advance.

There is too much unrest around the association, too many headlines have made the rounds about President Johan Eliasch and his reform plans.

Lobbying is the be-all and end-all

The respective chances are difficult to assess.

At least that's how Peter Fischer sees it.

"Ultimately, it's about lobbying, about who has done the best persuasion in the past months and weeks," says the veteran, who still heads the application after retiring from the operative business at the Garmisch Ski Club.

At the FIS Congress in Milan, which will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, it is unlikely that we will be able to exert much influence on the decision.

The program was curtailed too much.

The applicants show a short, maximum ten-minute image film, then there are five minutes for possible questions from the FIS board.

Own comments on the concept – deleted.

"The human factor is completely gone," emphasizes Martina Betz, the second chairwoman of the ski club.

A bit of networking on site – not in there.

"The whole feeling is no longer there," complains Fischer.

In Portugal in 2006 they came together for five days, the candidates had their own stands and presented themselves there.

Maria Höfl-Riesch acts as a World Cup ambassador

Now everything is a little more impersonal.

Well, at least the 17 members of the FIS Council are expected in person this time.

Except travel restrictions do not allow this.

However, only two representatives per location are allowed.

As representatives of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the choice fell on World Cup ambassador Maria Höfl-Riesch and Walter Vogl from the German Ski Association.

"If questions come up, they have to answer them," says Fischer.

How the choice of this duo came about, he does not go into great detail.

Only so much: "Maria was always set for me."

With all the tension before the big day, confidence definitely reigns.

The pound that Garmisch-Partenkirchen has to offer is the sustainability factor.

A central one in these times.

"We could hold a World Cup tomorrow," says Betz.

“We don't need to build anything new, we don't have to interfere with nature anywhere.

It couldn't be more sustainable in this area.” A fact that those responsible deliberately placed in the foreground of the application.

"Our motto is that we are always ready," emphasizes Fischer.

The World Cups this winter have impressively underlined that, argues Betz.

"We managed two top slaloms on the Gudiberg in difficult conditions."

Nothing speaks against Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Therefore, the candidate goes into the race with self-confidence.

"We can be proud of what we achieve," assures Betz.

"We've been in the World Cup since the beginning, we organize women's and men's races in speed and technique, we have the manpower." For Fischer and Betz it is clear that there is actually no conclusive argument why this World Championship should not go to Germany .

"We can't think of any.

It also has nothing to do with arrogance, I think we worked it out," says the deputy boss at the SCG.

At around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, the FIS Board of Directors gave the answer.

Then the organizer of the 2027 World Cup will be revealed.

Possibly only after several ballots.

Because: With four applicants, an absolute majority of 17 votes is required.
