Senior members of the legal system gathered this morning (Monday) to open the 21st conference of the Eilat Bar Association.
Participants included Supreme Court President Esther Hayut, Justice Minister Gideon Saar, Attorney General Gali Bahrav-Myara, State Attorney Amit Isman, Commissioner Kobi Shabtai, Bar Association Chairman Avi Chimi and Chief Military Attorney Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi.
Hayut condemned the attacks on the justice system, saying that "even when criticism is voiced, the discourse can be expected to be stately and respectful. "Discourse has also recently matured into riots in the judiciary and its judges, and blatant calls to harm them and weaken them by such and other creative means."
Hayut added "at the present time the state approach, dialogue and taking responsibility have given way to an increasingly confrontational discourse, which has been built within a resonant box of unfounded statements, speculations and information and trending data."
Hayut also referred to publications on lenient sentences by judges.
"Unlike noisy headlines that from time to time find their way into the media and social networks, Israeli judges do not mitigate the punishment of perpetrators or even the punishment of gun criminals," she explained.
"Punitive policy, with all its importance, alone cannot provide an effective solution to the issue of personal security and the serious phenomena that Israeli society faces in this context, including: violence for its various manifestations, including violence against women, murders and weapons offenses."
