Thirty firefighters have been mobilized since Sunday evening, following a chemical leak from the Maurepas wastewater treatment plant (Yvelines).
Ferric chloride escaped from a 22,000 liter tank.
According to initial findings, the station's retention tank, supposed to contain any overflows, did not perform its function either.
The chemical flowed into a nearby creek, via the storm water system.
The tank was not completely full but contained at least 13,000 liters of ferric chloride, a corrosive liquid used for water treatment.
The firefighters mobilized their unit specializing in chemical and technological risks.

They endeavored to plug the leak and pump the chemical contained in the retention tank.
This Monday morning, they had recovered 8.5 m3.
PH measurements to estimate the toxicity of the flow and its impact on fish are underway.
12 tons of dead fish in 2019 after the SIAAP accident
Chance of the calendar, the administrative court of Versailles examines tomorrow afternoon an eloquent precedent: the incident which occurred on July 3, 2019, in Achères.
That day, after the fire at the wastewater treatment plant managed by the SIAAP, a large quantity of untreated wastewater had been dumped into the Seine, causing a lack of oxygen in the river, up to 30 kilometers downstream from the station.
This accident caused the death by asphyxiation of 12 tons of fish.
The animal protection association PAZ seized the administrative court of Versailles in April 2020. "Our association seeks compensation for the damage caused to fish, which we have set ourselves the task of defending", specifies PAZ in a press release, on the eve of the hearing.
