Intisar Satik has been preparing rose water for nearly 15 years, and her small home project comes as a kind of continuity for her mother's journey, from whom she inherited her love for this industry and learned its assets from her own hands, in addition to securing additional economic returns.
Satik, who lives with her family in the Damsarkho area in Lattakia countryside, said in a statement to SANA reporter, "Her love for the rose in general prompted her to further research and study about its various uses and benefits, to find out that the municipal roses, that is, the Damascene rose that they plant in front of the family's house, possess the necessary specifications to obtain a product." High-quality rose water, rose syrup, rose jam, or dried its petals, so I increased its numbers according to what was available.”
With the advent of spring and the beginning of flowers opening, the place is filled with its sweet smell, and its pink color intertwined with white gives a special aesthetic touch, according to Satik, who indicated that the month of May is the best season for harvesting, as it cooperates with the family’s children in collecting the blooming flowers periodically so as not to be damaged or fall on the The ground and when the quantity becomes sufficient, we move to the second stage, which is placing the roses in the distillation machine (kilkah) and immersing them in a certain percentage of water and leaving them on a low heat while switching the water from the heating area to prevent the roses from burning and to ensure the success of the evaporation and distillation process.
Satik said, “Making rose water requires physical effort and a lot of patience, calmness, nerve control and length of mind. The distillation process may take a whole day, depending on the quantity. Each kilogram of rose produces a liter of rose water and needs distillation for one hour. After completion, the kalka is extinguished and left aside to cool and the rose water is poured Glass containers that are tightly closed, indicating that they have resorted to using firewood as an alternative to gas and diesel.”
Satik explained that she sometimes has to buy additional quantities of rose petals to meet the increasing demand, and prefers to obtain them directly from farmers, because the quantities in the market lose their luster and fragrant smell, as they ventilate them to prevent the petals from rotting on each other over time.
As for the marketing of the production, it indicated that the quantities it produces are spent by relatives, neighbors and friends in the workplace, noting that there is a great demand for rose water for its multiple benefits and uses.
