Arrest verdict for attempted murder: police officer appeals

The prison sentence for a police officer who set a woman on fire during an argument is expected to be reviewed by the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe.
As a spokesman for the Neubrandenburg district court said on Tuesday, the defense attorneys for the 56-year-old convict have appealed the verdict.
The regional court had found the man from the Rostock district guilty of attempted murder and dangerous bodily harm a week ago.
Neubrandenburg - It imposed eleven years imprisonment.
With the verdict, the district court remained just below the demand of the public prosecutor.
The defense had asked for two and a half years in prison for negligent arson.
The convict, who had been with the criminal police for more than 30 years, visited a 33-year-old friend in Neubrandenburg in October 2021.
According to the court, the man knocked the acquaintance and her mother unconscious during the argument.
Then he set the younger one on fire and fled.
He had taken methylated spirits, matches and gloves with him, the judge said.
The women were rescued, but the 33-year-old suffered severe burn injuries.
The fugitive was caught at his place of residence.
According to the district court, the background to the incident was that the man wanted to prevent a paternity suit from the 33-year-old victim from Neubrandenburg because of a daughter they had together.
The convict already has three children from two failed relationships.
