China called for countries to adhere to the principles of mutual respect, fairness and justice for all, and avoid politicizing human rights issues and double standards that provoke confrontation between camps.
"Multilateral human rights institutions should become a platform for cooperation and dialogue instead of becoming a new battleground for division and confrontation," Xinhua News Agency quoted Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as saying during his meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet in Guangzhou yesterday, expressing readiness China for constructive cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the basis of mutual respect and on an equal footing.
He said that major countries must take the lead in practicing pluralism, adhere to the goals and principles of the United Nations Charter, respect international law, and protect the principles of international integrity and justice.
Bachelet said that she attaches great importance to China's role and hopes to take this visit as an opportunity to enhance mutual understanding and trust, jointly deal with global challenges and promote the development of international human rights.
