The district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a safe place: This is evident from the crime statistics for the year 2021, which the police presented yesterday.

Accordingly, the corona pandemic caused the numbers to drop noticeably.

Nevertheless, there are problem children such as the booming call center fraud.

District – The corona pandemic with its lockdowns also had something good.

Because the temporary deep sleep of public life created fewer crime opportunities last year and thus pushed the crime statistics significantly down in the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district.

"The security situation is very pleasing," summed up Manfred Hauser, chief of police in southern Upper Bavaria, who presented the figures at a press conference.

This positive development creates trust, noted district administrator Anton Speer (free voters) - with the locals and the holidaymakers.

3542 crimes counted

The law enforcement officers registered a total of 3542 crimes in 2021 - 473 fewer than in the previous year.

That's a decrease of 11.8 percent.

The clearance rate was again very high at 73.2 percent (2020: 73.4 percent).

The so-called frequency number, which here in the district is 4,012 per 100,000 inhabitants, serves as an indicator of the spread of crime.

For comparison: there are 3,958 in the area of responsibility of the police headquarters in Upper Bavaria South and 4,138 in the entire state. Last year, 2013 suspects were identified in this country.

The proportion of foreigners was 47 percent, and that of children, young people and adolescents was 16.3 percent.

The individual criminal offenses included 630 brutality offences, 566 thefts, 483 cases of street crime, 456 property and counterfeiting offences,

338 drug offences, 83 sexual offences, 18 burglaries and 2 homicides were counted.

However, such surveys must not ignore the fact that there are sometimes unreported cases.

The implementation of the Corona policy also required officials who, for example, checked whether the hygiene requirements were being met.

“It was a mammoth task.

The aim was to contain the infection process," reported Hauser.

In his estimation, the majority of the population - despite isolated criticism - showed understanding for this.

The Monday demos ended peacefully, with Corona opponents venting their anger.

According to Hauser, only a small part of them showed anti-democratic tendencies.

New fields of crime

In the tourist region between Staffelsee and Karwendel there is not always sunshine.

The police see new fields of crime.

"We have a shift to the virtual," said Hauser - a trend that gives him stomach ache.

He described the spread of child pornography content, the thriving culture of hate on the Internet and the apparently flourishing business of call center scammers as "problem children".

The latter is spreading - and, especially among seniors, always finds gullible victims who are robbed of their savings.

"The perpetrators are becoming more and more perfidious and unscrupulous," warned Hauser.

The security authorities rely primarily on prevention and education in order to put a stop to the crooks, who mostly operate from abroad.

And what will 2022 bring?

For the police, this year is all about the G7 summit at the end of June at Schloss Elmau.

Preparations are in full swing.

13 protest events have been registered so far, from the rally to the star march.

In addition to the classic G7 opponents, more and more climate activists are expected.

Hauser explained that there were no concrete indications of other groups, for example from the lateral thinker scene.

"The mobilization is somewhat restrained overall." In 2015, when the heads of state and government of the seven most powerful western industrial nations met in the luxury hotel in the Isar valley, the "background noise" was stronger in the run-up.
