The Czech Republic, Austria and Slovenia recorded the first cases of monkeypox virus.
"The disease was detected in a man at the Military University Hospital in Prague, and we had been expecting this for days," said Pavel Dlohi, director of the Czech Society of Infectious Diseases, noting that it was only a matter of time.
For its part, the Czech Institute of Public Health said in a statement that the man had symptoms of the disease after returning from a music festival in Antwerp, northern Belgium, earlier this month.
In Austria, the health authorities said: “A man was transferred to a hospital in the capital, Vienna, after he showed symptoms of monkeypox, including fever, to be found later to have the disease.”
Slovenia also recorded a monkeypox infection in a man who showed symptoms of the epidemic after returning from the Spanish Canary Islands, according to the local health authorities.
It was recently reported that this rare virus is endemic in some African regions in several European countries, including Britain, France and Spain, as well as in the United States.
Monkeypox is an infectious disease that usually has mild symptoms. It is endemic in parts of West and Central Africa and spreads through close contact, so it can be contained relatively easily through measures such as self-isolation and personal hygiene.
