In the district of Landshut, the so-called pseudo-anger has appeared - the herpes disease is fatal for pets, but it is harmless for humans.

Landshut – The Aujeszky virus, which is deadly for dogs and cats in particular, has appeared in Bavaria.

Aujeszky's disease, also known as pseudorage, is a herpes infection that is transmitted through contact with saliva, blood or raw pork, explains the Landshut district office in a recent statement.

Pet owners in particular in the northern district of Landshut should be particularly careful about what their four-legged friends eat during long walks in the forest.

The Aujeszky virus was detected during a random examination of a wild boar in the Rottenburg area.

Dog virus in Bavaria: If pets become infected with the virus, they die

Pets such as dogs and cats, but also livestock such as domestic pigs and cows can become infected with the disease.

There is no danger for humans.

The main hosts of the virus are wild boar and rats.

For them, the disease is not fatal, but they spread it.

The virus persists in cured meat for up to 20 days and also survives in urine, manure and soil for some time.

This means that the pathogen can be transmitted not only through direct contact with infected wild or domestic pigs, but also through objects and food made from infected animals, according to the veterinary office.

Dog virus: The Landshut Veterinary Office strongly recommends the following information:

  • Keep dogs on a leash in or near the forest

  • Only use the paved paths

  • Avoid contact with live wild boar and their carcasses

  • Never let the dogs near luder places and wild animal collection points

  • Hunters should not leave the wild boar setting out openly, either on the farm or in the luder areas, as their hunting dogs can also become infected

  • Do not feed your animals raw (wild) pork or offal

  • Farmers should urgently comply with and constantly review their biosecurity measures

Dog virus: Once infected, the animals carry the virus in their bodies throughout their lives

As with well-known herpes diseases, the virus remains latent in the body of the infected creature as a pathogen for a lifetime.

Under certain conditions, such as stress or a disturbance in the immune system, the disease can break out and become infectious.

"In dogs, the disease manifests itself in conspicuous and aggressive behavior or disorientation of the animals, movement disorders, salivation and mostly extreme itching to the point of self-mutilation," the district continues to inform.

Dogs, cats and other pets cannot usually infect each other, but the disease is usually fatal for them.

There is also no vaccine against pseudo-rage.
