A wrong-way driver caused a serious accident on the A92 near Eitting on Tuesday morning.

The highway had to be completely closed.

Eitting/Freising – A wrong-way driver caused a serious accident on the A 92 Deggendorf-Munich autobahn early Tuesday morning.

Three people involved were injured, some seriously.

But there is no danger to life.

Andreas Woltz from the Freising traffic police reported that a 78-year-old from Munich drove his VW Golf in the wrong direction at the Freising-Mitte junction on the Autobahn towards Munich.

Several drivers dialed the emergency call because the Golf was coming toward them in the left lane.

But the police couldn't stop the man in time.

Between the Erding and Freising Ost junctions, the VW crashed head-on into a VW Amarok at around 4:35 a.m., which was being driven by an Austrian (43).

The pickup overturned and came to rest on the right side of the roadway.

Both drivers and the 77-year-old wife in the Golf suffered serious injuries.

The rescue service was on site with a large contingent, and a rescue helicopter landed at the scene of the accident.

Some of the occupants were trapped and had to be freed from the wreckage by the Eitting, Erding and Freising fire brigades.

The public prosecutor's office in Landshut ordered a blood sample to be taken from the perpetrator.

The police still have to clarify whether he intentionally or accidentally drove the wrong way onto the A 92.

The two VWs were totaled.

The A 92 was closed for two hours.
