The Hamburg Senator for Justice Anna Gallina (Greens) calls on the federal government to provide money for staff and digitization in the judiciary.
Hamburg intends to submit a corresponding proposal for a resolution to the conference of justice ministers on June 1 and 2, 2022.
In the last legislative period, the federal government had already supported the federal states with 220 million euros as part of the pact for the rule of law.
This was intended to hire more staff in courts and public prosecutor's offices.
According to the traffic light coalition agreement, the financial aid from the federal government should be continued and supplemented by a pact for digitization.
According to the initiative from Hamburg, both are necessary in order to maintain a functioning judiciary in the long term.
“The federal government must now follow up on the announcements with action.
That has not happened so far, which is why Hamburg is bringing the topic back to the conference of justice ministers," Justice Senator Gallina told SPIEGEL about the draft resolution.
One wants to remind Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) of his promises.
Federal legislation in particular would also give rise to new tasks in the judiciary of the federal states.
The federal and state governments are therefore "jointly responsible for securing what has been achieved so far and for further strengthening the judiciary in the area of digitization," said Gallina.
Federal Justice Minister Buschmann was recently criticized by the federal states and colleagues from the traffic light coalition.
The accusation was that he did not care enough about the promised support of the judiciary.
The previous rule of law pact expired in 2021.
