Four baby chicks hatched this week in a nesting box set up at one of the Mekorot sites in the center of the country.

This is part of the national initiative for the use of respirators and falcons in biological pesticides in agricultural areas, led by the Society for the Protection of Nature, the Dokifat Foundation, Plant Protection and Inspection Services at the Ministry of Agriculture, and includes about 5,000 nesting boxes from the north to the Negev. And the Society for the Protection of Nature.

The chicks, whose parents bring them food 20-10 times during one night, are expected to leave the nest and spread their wings about 60 days after hatching, so viewers have another full two months in which to see the chicks grow.

Itai Bloch, coordinator of the respiratory monitoring project at the Society for the Protection of Nature, said that this year's nesting of respirators is unusual, both in terms of date and quantity.

"In most parts of the country, nesting is small and relatively late compared to previous years, probably as a result of the unusual rainfall we experienced this year. , And reduce the need for the use of harmful and dangerous toxins to humans and the environment, "he said.

The live broadcast from a breathing nest allows a glimpse into the life of the bird of prey in Israel.

In addition, this year there will also be a live broadcast of nesting falcon nesting.

The transmitted falcons are currently in advanced incubation stages towards the hatching of the chicks.

Bloch adds that the falcons and pests, which are harmful rodent hunters in agricultural areas, contribute to the stabilization of the ecosystem in these areas, which provide unique conditions in terms of abundance and food distribution, allowing certain species to reproduce disproportionately with respect to natural conditions.

Prof. Yossi Leshem, a member of the Society for the Protection of Nature, an ornithologist and professor at the School of Zoology at Tel Aviv University, who heads the project, adds that the project to use respirators and falcons as biological exterminators in agriculture began in 1983 at Kibbutz Sde Eliyahu. 2008 became a national enterprise and was significantly expanded.

From 14 nesting boxes at the beginning of the journey, there are currently more than 5,000 nesting boxes throughout Israel. And so far it is considered a success story that has managed to reduce the use of toxins in Israel, and will reduce it further. In addition, the Jordanians, Palestinians, Cypriots, Greeks and even Moroccans have joined the initiative.

"The larger and more continuous the common areas in the project, the larger, more permanent and healthier the population will be and the success of the project will increase. In addition, the regional cooperation is a platform for mediation between the Jordanians, Palestinians and Israelis. And in joint forces to learn from experience to improve the method, and thus contribute to the promotion of environmentally friendly agriculture, "concludes Prof. Leshem.
