Price on the one hand, hassle on the other.

The residential complex on Genter Strasse continues to make headlines.

The Berlin Memorial Church, Tegel Airport, the Olympic Park – and now the residential complex at Genter Strasse 13. In that order, these are the winners of the “Classic Nike”, a prize from the Association of German Architects (BDA).

The Schwabing plant was recently in the headlines because of a completely different topic.

As reported, water has been filling the cellars here for years.

The award-winning monument is in danger of drowning.

"This award is sensational," says Franziska von Gagern.

All the world understand what a treasure it is.

Only the city doesn't care, complains the resident, who represents the Genter Strasse interest group.

She has been fighting for a dry basement for years, but nothing happens.

For lawyer Benno Ziegler - he represents the residents and owners - the award means that it is now becoming even clearer what the importance of the property is.

And that, according to the Bavarian constitution, it is the task of the public sector to finally act.

The office opened by Otto Steidle is still there

Otherwise the plant is in danger of decay.

It was completed in 1972. The building, which has been a listed building since 2010, was designed by Otto Steidle with Ralph and Doris Thut.

"The robust basic framework, the simplicity of the varied expansion, the economy of means and the participation of the residents make the group of buildings on Genter Strasse a model for sustainable housing construction," the jury of architects justified their verdict.

The prize was awarded at the weekend in Nuremberg.

A special feature of the facility is the great freedom, says Johann Spengler.

He must know.

Spengler is the managing partner of Steidle-Architekten, the office of Otto Steidle, who died in 2004, based at Genter Strasse 13. The seven terraced houses were built from prefabricated elements.

As a result, there are no load-bearing walls, which means great flexibility - which has now been awarded.

Spengler has been here since 1988.

He still remembers how the storm sewer was built.

A possible reason for the anger.

There have only been problems for around six years.
