Storm danger: turbulent evening in Bavaria – all clear for the night

After Franconia in particular had to deal with severe storms at the weekend, the weather forecast for Monday looks dangerous again.

Calm returns to the Bavarian weather kitchen.

After a turbulent evening, which brought some severe storms throughout the Free State, only small areas in Lower Bavaria are still at risk of thunderstorms late in the evening.

But these are now also moving further east, which means that the night in Bavaria is quiet.

Only showers are spreading, especially in the south, continuous rain is expected to start tomorrow morning.

However, further thunderstorms are not expected for the time being.

Thunder, lightning and heavy rain, including strong winds, kept the promises of the German weather service, which had warned of severe weather.

The "worst part" should be over for the state capital, but an official warning from the German Weather Service against thunderstorms still applies.

The turbulent weather conditions apply up to and including 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

The thunderstorm cells, just over Munich, are now moving further east and will soon reach Lower Bavaria.

The German Weather Service is currently warning of thunderstorms in Munich.

Literally it says: "Thunderstorms are approaching from the southwest.

The severe storms, as the DWD calls them, also pose a danger to life.

Trees can be uprooted and roof tiles, branches or objects can fall.

Secure items outdoors!

In particular, keep your distance from buildings, trees, scaffolding and high-voltage lines!

For the whole of Bavaria it means until midnight today: It can get uncomfortable.

The German Weather Service has issued a warning of severe thunderstorms affecting the entire Free State.

The warning applies up to and including 1 a.m. on Tuesday.

Heavy rain and even hail can occur.

The thunderstorms are currently moving across the entire south-west of Bavaria, as of now the front is moving eastwards in the course of the evening.

Weather in Bavaria: Warning for the entire Free State – heavy rain and hail possible

Update from May 23, 5 p.m.:

The first reports of consequences of the thunderstorms that have been moving across large parts of Bavaria since the early afternoon are making the rounds.

A storm with hail and heavy rain has fallen in the Allgäu.

A police spokesman said that there had been several operations, especially in the Ostallgäu, including in Füssen, underground car parks or cellars had filled with water.

According to the DWD weather map, severe thunderstorms are brewing in western Bavaria.

From the afternoon to the evening and into the night, warnings of heavy rain, heavy hail and hurricane-force gusts apply throughout Bavaria.

For all of Bavaria, the DWD warns of severe thunderstorms with heavy rain, hurricane gusts and hail.

For the south of Bavaria, the DWD calls out even stricter warnings, there is talk of warning level three.

Severe thunderstorms with hurricane gusts of up to 120 km/h occur near the Alps.

There is an “advance warning of severe thunderstorms” for all of Bavaria.

This applies from Monday (2 p.m.) to Tuesday (midnight).

The DWD says: “From the early afternoon hours of Monday, strong thunderstorms will come from the west and south-west.

Heavy rain of between 25 and 40 l/sqm is to be expected in a short time.

Other side effects are larger hail of 4 cm and hurricane-force gusts of 115 km/h.

Over the course of Tuesday night, the thunderstorms will gradually move eastwards.”

DWD does not rule out "hail up to four centimeters".

Wetter.de meteorologist Paul Heger does not even rule out renewed tornadoes in his forecast: "Individual violent thunderstorms or super cells will be able to form, which will also increase the risk of tornadoes." The DWD also warned of tornadoes for Franconia on Friday.

According to the expert, heavy rainfall of up to 60 liters in one hour could fall within the thunderstorm cells within a very short time.

On Tuesday it will be mostly sunny again in Bavaria.
